First teaching practice

Let me tell you about my first teaching practice in the last period. After going to observe the class, the mentor told us that we have to be in her class one day before to develop our practices, so I was going to teach on Friday, and she asked to go to her class on Thursday too. There she gave me like the agenda that I have to develop; she told that after the warm-up I have to make a short review of the topic that she had already introduced, and the topic was “Frequency Adverbs” then she told me that I have to teach grammar, and finally the warp-up. At the beginning, I was scared because I thought that I was not going to cover all the time.  As on Fridays I don´t have classes, I arrived very early to the classroom; I started writing the agenda and the objective; also, I cut masking type because I was going to use it for the charts; when it was 3:48, my classmate arrived, and by that time, I was ready to start the class, and he asked me where the students were because anybody wasn´t there, and we thought that may be they were not going to be in the class because the teacher told them that I was going to teach; suddenly, the teacher arrived, by that time, it was time to start the class, but she told me to wait some more minutes. Finally, four students arrived, and then three more arrived, so I started around 4:00 pm. The warm-up that I developed was called Frequency Adverbs; I asked them to make circle, and when I mentioned some frequency adverbs they had to change place; they really had fun with this game.

Then in the short review, first, I wrote on the board the frequency, and I asked for volunteers to come to the board and to write some frequency adverbs that they remember, and all of them were able to do it correctly.

In the grammar phase, I gave them a sheet of paper with the meaning of the frequency adverbs; also, I made them repeat after me the frequency adverbs; then I pasted some charts and explained the structure of frequency adverbs with “action verbs” and with the verb “to be” in the positive, negative and interrogative form; in this part, I was supposed to spend around 15 minutes, and when I checked the time, I have spent around 20 minutes. I think this happened because teacher told me to try to speak so slowly since the students are in basic.

To end up with the class, I asked the students to make two groups; I gave them a balloon and some sentences for they to unscramble them, and one of the students in the group has run with the balloon between his legs and writes the sentences on the board.

  1. Hi Marvin :). I have to say that I really love your activities in which you use balloons because they are really funny and interactive. We know that your classes are really nice Marvin because you have a really good enthusiasm. Also that you used repetition to teach the grammar is a good way to do it because we know that repetition is one of the best and the most important methods that we have to apply if we want to make students to learn what we are teaching. So what I have to say is Good Job Marvin!! :).
